Merino Wool Blanket for Cats & Dogs

We started looking for a natural fiber because Zoe scratches after a night on our synthetic bedding. Most pet blankets are polyester fleece or sherpa (polyester made to look like wool). Both pill, trap heat and hold on to smells. So we looked at baby blankets instead. They are held to strict standards for what touches skin. This one is made for cribs and certified like one.
Kiki went straight for it every time it came out. Zoe slept on it too, but she also pulled at the pile and tried to eat the wool. She does the same with anything stringy, which is why she has no rope toys or fringed blankets. So it spent most of its time put away, out of Zoe's reach. It is for cats, and for dogs who lie on a blanket rather than pull at it.
Wool can absorb moisture without feeling damp. This keeps the blanket comfortable in every season. In a Porto winter, that matters as much as warmth. Cozy on a cold floor, comfortable once the heating is on.
Like new leather, new wool has a natural scent of its own. It comes from lanolin, the oil in the fleece, and it fades with airing.
Wool resists odor, so it needs washing far less often than fleece. Most of the time, airing it out is enough. When it does need a wash, use a wool cycle and wool detergent, then dry it flat. We washed ours, and it came out the same size and texture as before.
